Devon grew up in the forest city of London, Ontario. When he was young, he enjoyed playing outdoors in Beavers, Scouts, and Outward Bound. In high school, Devon decided to pursue a forestry education at Lakehead University. This training changed the way he perceived forests, and provided the foundation for a career in natural resource management.
During Devon’s undergraduate education, he spent his summers working on an initial attack fire crew. In 2009, Devon graduated from Lakehead University with dual HBScF. and HBES degrees. After school, he worked on projects such as FireSmart, Mountain Pine Beetle, block layout, and ecological restoration. After three years of practice, Devon received his Alberta Registered Professional Forester (RPF) designation.
In 2012, Devon decided to return to school and further his education. Devon found Dr. Flannigan and wrote a proposal to do a Master’s on determining the efficacy of sprinklers. His research topic is Fuel Moisture Changes from a Sprinkler Watering Treatment in Interior Alaska Boreal Forest. The goal is to prevent fires around values by creating a saturated buffer zone. Devon is also working as a Forest Protection Technician (FPT) with British Columbia Wildfire Services (BCWS).
